Water & Wastewater Program

Public Water Supplies

Wyoming is the only state in the union that does not have primacy for the Safe Drinking Water Program. The responsibilities for insuring that drinking water is safe in Wyoming are shared between the Wyoming Water Quality Division and the US EPA Region 8 Direct Implementation Program.  The EPA Region 8 contacts for the direct implementation program are listed on this Web Page: http://www.epa.gov/region8/water/dwhome/index.html  Public eating and drinking establishments are monitored by either the Wyoming Department of Agriculture Consumer Health Services Division or a local health department.  If an infectious pathogen or poison is suspected in the water supply the Wyoming Department of Health becomes involved.

Water sample results and compliance issues are handled by the US EPA Region 8 Direct Implementation Program.  Any public water supply must coordinate directly with Region 8 to obtain a public water supply number and to determine what testing will be required.

Any construction activities involving a public water supply system must obtain a permit to construct from the Wyoming DEQ/WQD Water and Wastewater Progam.

Chapter 12, of the Water Quality Division Rules and Regulations defines the requirements for the construction of public water supplies.

The other programs that help insure the supply of safe drinking water to Wyoming's citizens include the operator certification, source water assessment and protection (SWAP), and the State Revolving Funds (SRF) for construction and other improvements to water supplies.  These programs have been delegated to Wyoming DEQ although the overall responsibility for the Safe Drinking Water Program has not been delegated.

Has your system been reviewed? To request a facility configuration review, please send a written request to Kim Parker, Operator Certification Program. DEQ uses the ABC classification criteria and Chapter 5 to complete the review. To see how your facility classification may change, review the forms.
