DEQ Supports Citizen Proposal

In March of 2010, Dr. Al Young submitted a proposal to assist with clean-up of the source area.  This clean-up consists of clearing and leveling the site to decrease recharge and make the site more amenable to future use.  In a June 7, 2010 memo from WDEQ to the US Army Corps of Engineers WDEQ stated that WDEQ supports the proposal to clear and level Missile Site 4 due to advantages such as:

  1. Redirection of recharge from the original contamination path.
  2. Aesthetic appeal of removing the pits and the rubbish currently in them.
  3. Increased safety if the Belvoir Ranch is ever opened to the public.

Currently, the flame pits act as a favorable pathway for recharge.  Enactment of this proposal would preclude that.  Dr. Young’s proposal is not a comprehensive remedy for the source area, however, filling in the flame pits would have these advantages.
