DEQ Supports Citizen Proposal
In March
of 2010, Dr. Al Young submitted a proposal to assist with clean-up of
the source area. This
clean-up consists of clearing and leveling the site to decrease recharge
and make the site more amenable to future use.
In a June 7, 2010 memo from WDEQ to the US Army Corps of
Engineers WDEQ stated that
WDEQ supports
the proposal to clear and level Missile Site 4 due to advantages such
as:
- Redirection of
recharge from the original contamination path.
- Aesthetic
appeal of removing the pits and the rubbish currently in them.
- Increased
safety if the Belvoir Ranch is ever opened to the public.
Currently, the flame pits act as a favorable pathway for recharge. Enactment of this proposal would preclude that. Dr. Young’s proposal is not a comprehensive remedy for the source area, however, filling in the flame pits would have these advantages.
