Outreach Pollution Prevention Program
The
Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality P2 Coordinator provides site visits
and assistance to businesses, government agencies and the public to improve the
environment and save money through pollution prevention methods. This is a
free, voluntary non-regulatory assistance program that provides information and
technical assistance to reduce pollution. The site visits are designed to help
facility operators identify ways to conserve resources, take advantage of less
polluting raw materials, improve housekeeping practices and increase process
efficiency. Pollution prevention, also known as P2, offers a proactive
approach to environmental management by eliminating pollution prior to
recycling, treatment, or disposal. Examples of P2 measures include
equipment and process modifications, changes in product design, substitution of
raw materials, improved housekeeping, preventative maintenance, employee
training, and inventory control.
P2 measures offer benefits over traditional control technologies because they prevent the transfer of pollutants from one waste stream to another and can lower operating costs by reducing energy, water and raw material costs, waste disposal costs, regulation costs, liability, and worker exposure. For these reasons, DEQ considers P2 to be the preferred approach to environmental management and offers a number of free services to get you started, from checklists to phone consultations and on-site assistance.
The DEQ offers free, on-site Pollution Prevention Audits through the University of Wyoming and Manufacturing-Works. These audits can show you how to:
- Make more
efficient use of the energy and raw materials you use,
- Reduce
waste disposal and handling costs,
- Reduce regulatory compliance
and liability costs, and
- Decrease
worker exposure.
