About AML

The Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) is one of five divisions of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. AML’s mission is to mitigate safety hazards and repair environmental damage from past mining activities, and to assist communities impacted by mining.

The AML traditional reclamation program has reclaimed thousands of acres of abandoned coal, bentonite, and uranium open pit mines, and new projects are initiated each year. AML has also closed several hundred hazardous gold and copper mine openings, and has an ongoing program to mitigate subsidence risks. AML also makes subsidence insurance available to property owners in affected communities.
